Are You Struggling with Repentance?
Living a Life of Repentance
Repentance is a word that confuses many. Some think of repentance as an apology. Others believe that repentance is a type of prayer prayed to be born-again and there is no need to continue a life of repentance. But repentance is not an apology; it’s godly sorrow that turns the human heart back to God’s. It is a wonderful gift God gives to His children.
Repentance opens up a path of connectedness between you and God. He knows we live in a broken world with broken people. This is why He gave us the Spirit of truth who guides us because when we are left to find our own way, we will get lost. Repentance allows us to hear the Spirit.
“Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.”—Proverbs 26:12
A lifestyle of repentance is not a legalistic approach to worship, but rather the freedom to approach the throne of grace in your time of need and access the power of God.It is a process of…
- Coming out of agreement with lies
- Choosing to align with the heart of God rather than your own way
- Returning to the Lord and asking Him to separate your sins far from you
- Laying your brokenness at the feet of the cross in return for His forgiveness
You see, the enemy wants to keep you from living a lifestyle of repentance so that he can hold these things against you in the spiritual realm. What does that mean?
It means that your adversary, the devil, is prowling around like a lion, waiting to devour (1 Peter 5:8). This may seem alarming, but it doesn’t have to.
Satan is waiting for you to sin so that he can gain a foothold in your life (Ephesians 4:27). But every time you turn to God, confess your transgressions and struggles, and resist the enemy, he will flee (James 4:7).
This may be something you have to do over and over again. That’s okay! God is faithful to forgive each and every time. He wants you to turn to Him because it places you under the wings of His protection.
How to Live a Life of Repentance
Step 1: Start by praying a repentant prayer. The Bible tells us to draw near to the Lord and He will draw near to us. We draw near to Him through the cleansing act of repentance. Malachi 3 describes God being unchangeable and we are the ones that waver. Our emotions can guide us away from Him but when we return to Him, He returns to us.Jeremiah 17:9 says,
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked…” This is why we need to cleanse our hearts and minds of destructive thoughts and ask God to give us His desires.
“If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”—Colossians 3:1-3 (emphasis added)
Step 2: Check out the resources below. We understand living a life of repentance needs support and encouragement. That’s why we’ve developed resources for you to use during your personal time. Use them as a springboard into your study and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you as you read them so you can have wisdom and understanding about repentance.
Step 3: Meditate and declare God’s Word. One of the most powerful things you can do during your devotional time with the Lord is to declare His life-giving Word. After a time of repentance, fill your mind with His promises such as Jeremiah 29:11, John 10:10, and Psalm 103.
“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.”—Romans 8:1Declaring God’s promises aligns you with the Spirit.
