Proceed with Caution… It’s a Godly Strength!

Words like guarded, wary, and watchful are used to describe the characteristic of cautiousness. Being cautious can bring many images to your mind. ‘Proceed with caution’ is a sign we may see that sparks a feeling of hesitation or even fear. So how does cautiousness work in a Believer’s life? What does God say about this fruitful gift?

What does God say about cautiousness?…

Using biblical caution in situations means that you are enacting Godly wisdom, discernment, and self-control without rushing God’s perfect timing.

• “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.”—1 Thessalonians 5:16-22

Here God tells us to pray and give thanks, allowing our thoughts to go to Him before we act.

• “…casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ…”—2 Corinthians 10:5

God wants us to slow down, to be on guard when we are driven by excitement or passion. When we start to think in the ways of the flesh—pride, ambition, or success for example—we must stop and give those thoughts to Christ, asking Him for the wisdom to proceed with caution.

What cautiousness is not…

Just as with any spiritual gift, the enemy will look for ways to combat it. Satan could tempt you with fear or even haste. Sometimes the enemy will tell you the lie that you must hurry or you will miss out. God promises that you miss out on nothing in Him. In fact, we are lavishly blessed in Him. The enemy could try to lull you to sleep so that you can be caught off guard. God wants us to seek His wisdom through His Word, prayer and other Believers, before we make decisions. To test all things. This takes precious time.

Be encouraged…

The Lord will use this gift as a blessing and protection. He promises that His timing is perfect, and with this Godly Strength of cautiousness, He walks before you to accomplish His will. May the Lord bless your heart to walk in His ways and use your cautiousness for the good of the Kingdom!
