Israel Planning Construction of Underground Barrier to Stop Hamas
It’s an unfortunate reality in Israel — there is a constant concern of terrorist activity by Hamas, and of the ways in which terrorist operatives can get into the country. One of the ways Hamas has regularly smuggled in terrorists, weapons, explosives and contraband is through what have been referred to as “terror tunnels,” underground tunnels developed by these terrorists.
Israeli defense officials recently met to discuss ways to prevent these terrorists from continuing to infiltrate the country. One initiative that will soon begin is creating a massive underground barrier along the border with Gaza in order to block Hamas militants from using tunnels to reach Israel and conduct their terrorist operations.
Many military officials have been pointing to these tunnels as a significant strategic threat for many years. The country has regularly destroyed these tunnels when made aware of them, including 32 tunnels discovered during a 2014 Gaza conflict with Hamas. However, more tunnels have been discovered since then, and the military has had to once again invest in significant efforts to detect, block, and destroy them. Israel currently has a technologically advanced fence above ground that is armed with sensors, cameras, barbed wire and watchtowers, but additional technology has proved necessary in order to help uncover these terrorists tunnels.
Underground barrier work has already begun, and when completed, it is expected to stretch the entire 45-mile border of Gaza. The barrier, which will be made of concrete, will run hundreds of feet deep. The construction of the barrier could take years, but seems to be the final idea Israel has to put an end to these terror tunnels once and for all.
At Curt Landry Ministries, we continue to offer our prayers and support to the Israeli military. We have supported a number of initiatives directly related to these tunnels. At My Olive Tree, for example, olive tree farms have planted “peace groves” located directly over former terrorists tunnel sites in a symbolic effort to reclaim the desert from evil and death.
