How Should Christians Vote & Pray for Governing Authorities?

Should Believers care about politics? Should Christians vote and pray for those in leadership? The Bible is clear that Christians should pray for governing authorities.

As Christians, we must ask God for wisdom and discernment in every matter and obey what is written. The Spirit will echo God’s Word to us as we pray for those in leadership and decide how to vote. Remember, no matter what we do, we should do it all for the glory of God–this includes voting (see 1 Corinthians 10:31).

So then, Christians should vote, taking action according to biblical principles.

As difficult as it may be, we must not vote on a person or party but on God’s Word to prevail. His will for our lives, families, communities, states, and nations should permeate our prayers and actions. His will takes precedence over all things.

We must ask ourselves…

  • Am I familiar with what the Bible says about identity, marriage, life, and faith?
  • What does a particular person or party stand for?
  • Does it align with biblical principles?

These answers reveal how Christians should vote.

Choosing to Get Off the Sidelines

In today’s world, we can no longer sit on the sidelines and remain indifferent or apathetic regarding what happens around us. The political climate is becoming more intense and moving away from biblical principles, as predicted in the Bible. This should compel Christians to vote and pray, knowing current events align with Bible prophecy and our prayers have power.

It is our call to stand for what God stands for, to be a beacon of truth and righteousness, even when it goes against what might seem “popular.” This does not mean we are to take vengeance, as that is the Lord’s (Romans 12:19), but it does mean we stand for what is right and trust God with the outcome.

Remember Romans 8:28. He will work all things out for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. You can stand firm in this promise.

Government Is Not God, and We Have Authority to Bring Heaven to Earth.

It is important to vote and pray based on God’s Word. Therefore, we need to understand what He says about the topic.

While politics and government don’t bring the freedom and justice God does, the Word does remind us that we have authority in Yeshua over powers and principalities. We are responsible for praying for communities, territories, and nations, just as we are responsible for praying for others, warring in the spirit, not the flesh (Ephesians 6:10-13).

This means…

  • We war in prayer, making decrees and declarations that stand against dark powers and principalities (including territories, communities, states, and nations) and agree with God’s Word.
  • We humble ourselves, turn from anything in our lives contrary to God’s Word, and surrender it to Him (2 Chronicles 7:14). We must allow Him to purify and cleanse us and get our households in order.

When the disciples asked Yeshua how to pray, He gave us a model–the Lord’s Prayer (Luke 11:1-4). He said to…

  • Recognize the Father and where He reigns (Heaven).
  • Recognize His holiness.
  • Recognize His Kingdom and authority and ask for it to be manifested on earth.
  • Ask for what you need to accomplish His plans for you today.
  • Ask for any unforgiveness to be revealed in your heart and repent.
  • Forgive others.
  • Ask for protection against temptations and the enemy.
  • Ask for deliverance and freedom from evil.

Let us not only pray like this but also activate those prayers through our decisions—at the voting booths, in our homes, work, communities, and spheres of influence.

Christians Should Vote and Pray According to the Word

Vote for governing authorities who align with God’s Word and pray for them to be led by the Lord.

Obey legitimate authority as it aligns with God’s Word.

We must not overlook the fact that how governments and nations interact with Israel plays a role in a nation’s prosperity and peace or its downfall (Genesis 12:3).
