God’s Covenant Promises to Overcome
How often do we find ourselves in troubling situations and start to feel overwhelmed? For some of us, these overwhelming situations happen daily. For others, they tend to come in waves. Whatever your circumstances may be at this time, the first step to overcoming them is to know that God’s covenant promises are not conditional.

God’s Covenant Promises to Overcome Are Not Conditional
What does, “God’s covenant promises to overcome are not conditional” mean? It means that no matter our circumstances—full of joy or full of pain—God’s promises remain. They do not change.
Let’s look at Ecclesiastes 3:1-8…
- “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to gain, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.”
Solomon is reminding us that there will be many types of circumstances that we are up against in our lives. Some will be full of laughter and others will be full of pain. This is inevitable.
So then, what do you do during these times of trouble so that you can overcome?
- You remember the covenant you have with the Lord.
- You remember that His covenant promises are not conditional or based on your circumstances.
- You remember that His covenant promises are unconditional, based on God’s never-changing character.
There are steps you can take that will help you tap into the covenant promises of God so that you overcome seasons of trouble in your life.
Listen and watch as Curt Landry teaches you the steps to overcome by using the covenant promises of God.
3 Steps to Activating God’s Covenant Promises to Overcome
Step 1. Acknowledge the battle.
Ephesians 6:12 tells us that we are at war, not against flesh and blood, but with powers and principalities of darkness. We are in a spiritual battle. Second Corinthians 4:8 says, “We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;”
This is a covenant promise. Being hard-pressed and perplexed does not nullify God’s ability to heal, bless, and prosper you during any season.
Because we are in a battle, we must be aware of how our flesh can come into alignment with a lie. Our flesh can agree with a lie by thinking, “I’ll draw near to the Lord, and get into the Word, proclaiming it and living it once this season is over.”
On the contrary, the Lord says, “Draw near to me NOW. You don’t have to wait. There is something I want to reveal to you in this season so that you will prosper and be better prepared for the next.”
Step 2. Hold on to the covenant promises.
The key behind this step is to get familiar with the covenant promises of God. He made a covenant with you and He wants you to meditate, write, and speak out the promises within it.
There are three covenant promises to hang on to when you need to overcome…
- Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
- Romans 8:37, “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”
- 1 John 4:4, “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
Notice what these verses don’t say. They don’t say you can do all things through Christ, you are more than a conqueror, and you overcome except in times of trouble.
These verses are written in covenant language. What Jesus did on the cross—conquered death and expunged sin—freed you and gave you access to the covenant. Because of Him, you now have a relationship with the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
You have been grafted into the covenant and heirs according to the promise! Proclaim these truths today and know that your circumstances do not nullify the covenant promises of God.
Step 3. Know what to do while you wait on the covenant promises.
Knowing what to do while you wait is the key to overcoming. The waiting gap is your opportunity to serve God as He prepares you for what is next. During this time, you may want to “do nothing.” Be careful, because if you do nothing in the gap, the desires and dreams God has for you may be delayed or stolen.
So what do you do while you wait on the covenant promises?
- Realize it is God who fills the waiting gap. Don’t look for people, places, or circumstances to fill you up during this time. Turn to God. It is His responsibility to fill the waiting gap.
- Stay focused on the assignment at the time. Take Joseph, for example. He was given a dream but then found himself sold by his brothers, thrown into jail, and accused of adultery. He didn’t complain. He focused on reflecting God’s character to others and on his assignment in the season. He could have dug in his heels and said, “I’m not supposed to be in jail. I’m supposed to be ruling! I had a dream that my brothers bowed to me. I’m not doing anything until that dream comes to pass.” Instead, Joseph did his best in every circumstance and God blessed him.
- Practice praise, prayer, and proclamations. During this waiting gap, praise God and proclaim His Word. Allow Him to build your character and then practice displaying it. Second Peter 1:5-7 is a great scripture that reminds you to add virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, kindness, and love to your faith.
The Outcome of Activating Covenant Promises
Not only will you overcome your circumstances when you activate God’s covenant promises, but He will also start to change and transform you, giving you the desires of your heart!
We encourage you, no matter what day or season you are reading this, to start a 40-day challenge and see how the Lord transforms your life…
For 40 days, do this…
- Read Jeremiah 29:11-14 every day. Meditate on this word and watch it shape your mind, will, and emotions…
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back from your captivity; I will gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you, says the Lord, and I will bring you to the place from which I cause you to be carried away captive.”
- Focus on what God calls you to do for the day. Don’t focus on the outcomes you want, rather focus on staying aligned and following the Spirit’s direction. Ask God to establish your steps for the day and to clearly speak to your heart so that you can bring His will to earth.
- Hang on to the covenant promises and write them down. As mentioned above, Philippians 4:13, Romans 8:37, and 1 John 4:4 are covenant promises. We encourage you to write them down and proclaim them whenever you are feeling overwhelmed.
In Summary…
God has not promised us that we won’t have times and seasons of pain and troubles. But He has given us covenant promises to call upon and activate in those seasons so that we can overcome them.
