Shift Your Attitude to Change Your Life
Have you been feeling as if you are stuck in a pattern of negative thinking? Do want to see life the way God would have you see it? Then join us below as we discover how shifting your attitude and perspective can change your life!
Why the Right Attitude and Perspective Matters…
There are two forces which often lead us down paths we never would have envisioned for our lives. They are the heart and the mind. This, in part, is because—as the Word reveals—we think things in our hearts and in our minds (see Matthew 12:34, Matthew 15:18, Luke 6:45, and Proverbs 23:7).
In other words, our innermost being creates within us habits and patterns that can even affect our bodies.
Only in recent years has technology begun to allow us to even glimpse the importance of how attitude, perspective, and thought life affect not only our happiness, but our health and productivity as well. Even the enemy has misused many of these basic principles—twisting it to a worldly standard of moral attitude and perspective, alluding to a power of positive thinking without THE Power behind it. Yet, God spoke about these things in His Word thousands of years ago…
“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.”—Proverbs 4:23
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. ‘Eat and drink!’ he says to you, but his heart is not with you.”—Proverbs 23:7
“… For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”
—Matthew 12:34
“But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man.”—Matthew 15:18
“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”—Luke 6:45
Still, how do we, as Believers, shift our attitudes and perspectives, and live to the fullness God intended for us? Well, to uncover that mystery we need to seek the source of that wisdom: God, through His Word.
How Do We Shift Our Attitudes and Perspectives?
One of the biggest keys to shifting attitude and perspective is altering what we “put into” ourselves. This does not mean we change what we put into our mouths, but instead, what we put before our eyes, what we listen to, what we speak—what comes out of us—and not entertaining negative or evil thoughts.
Now, this shifting is not necessarily going to happen overnight because it was not overnight that our attitudes and perspectives formed. Instead, it is a process. One where we make the choice to do the little thing so that God can step in and do the big thing.
“You do the little thing, and God will do the big thing.”—Curt Landry
So, what is the little thing to shifting our attitudes and perspectives?
Well, it is making a conscious choice to watch what we think, speak, and consume. It is spending time with God, particularly by consuming His Word. It is making the choice to do our best to shift, and make room for God to work in us…
For instance, if we are constantly thinking negatively, or speaking negatively, then being aware of that behavior and working to shift it… that is doing the small thing. Be it through one or more ways, such as:
- Rewarding ourselves by making a special daily time just to walk and talk with the Lord—letting Him show us His heart as we seek His face on those negative thoughts…
- Habitually writing/journaling Scripture—learning to quote a positive Scripture when led down a negative path…
- Lessening negative input with Holy Spirit input—repenting, praying, and praising Him for His goodness and faithfulness to work in our lives.
These are just a few of the ways that can begin to bring a shift to ingrained attitudes and wrong perspectives. Evil thoughts and words—slander, swearing, self-deprecation, or any host of other things that we need to shift can be changed by the power of the Holy Spirit if we but simply choose to begin the process of change. When we do that small thing, God will help us every step of the way—He will see it done!
Positive thinking “power” may be a popular methodology in the world right now, but its importance and truth began and continues in the Word of God. By changing our habits and patterns—starting in our minds and words with Godly attitudes and perspectives—we can go higher with God. We can go higher in our calling, equipped for a bigger and better season of Kingdom purpose!
Shifting Attitude and Perspective by Washing in the Word…
As mentioned above, there are many things we can do to shift our attitudes and perspectives—our habits and patterns—yet, one of the best ways is by washing ourselves in the Word. There is something about reading truth, speaking it out in word, proclamation, decree, and prayer that has power beyond what we often realize.
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”—Hebrews 4:12
The Word of God places truth within us, but it also reveals truth to us. If we are struggling with negativity, doubt, fear, or any other thing contrary to what God desires us to walk in, by spending time in His Word, reading it, speaking it, decreeing it, praying it… then it will reveal truth and change us from the inside out!
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”—2 Timothy 3:16-17
God’s Word teaches us, directs us into His ways and thereby, through its implementation, prepares us for all He desires for us… all He created us to accomplish and be!
Further, the Word of God is our guide, a light to our path (see Psalm 119:105), and our compass pointing true North. Reading it restores our health—both spiritually and figuratively—and it strengthens us, even to our very bones (see Proverbs 3:7-8). But also in faith… for God’s Word is living, it is active, and Jesus—the Word made flesh—was given so that we, as Gentile Believers, might come into the power of God’s Word (see Hebrews 4:12 and John 1:14).
“Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.”
—Deuteronomy 11:18-19
We were made to consume the Word of God and be made whole by it. It is our bread, and without it being near us and within us, we cannot be healthy or whole. Without it we starve.
Deuteronomy 11:18-19 (shown above) reminds us that we are to keep the Word of God with us everywhere. While we may not literally strap the Word of God to our body, we are meant to strap the Word to our heart, soul, and mind—placing it continually before our eyes.
How we each choose to do this may differ in part, but we are meant to consume the Word, to think on it, speak it out… we are meant to be forever hungry for His Word, finding wisdom, faith, truth, and more within it.
Therefore, let us change our attitudes and perspectives by choosing to do the little thing. Let us seek God and consume His Word daily—reading, hearing, thinking, and speaking the Word as we are able. Let us go to God and His Word FIRST when we find ourselves struggling or confused…
Let us find restoration and completion in Him!
