How to Prepare for Passover in Your Home
If you can’t join us in person for a Passover Seder or access a local Seder in your community, you can hold one right in your home! That’s exactly how the first Passover happened–in the homes of the Israelites with their families. The blood of the lamb covered the doorposts of their homes, protecting them from death and judgment (Exodus 12:23).
In the same way, keeping Passover in your home symbolizes that your household is under Jesus’s blood-covering for protection, provision, and deliverance.
Keep reading to learn the ingredients on the seder plate, suggested resources for Passover at home, and scriptures that remind us how powerful this appointed time is!
Power in the Blood of the Lamb
The Israelites found safety under the blood of the Lamb, as do all those who put their faith in Jesus, Yeshua, for salvation today. As you prepare for Passover, declare these scriptures over your home, cleansing your atmosphere in the blood of Jesus. Declare your home is under His authority!
- “…when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to strike you.” —Exodus 12:23 (emphasis added)
- “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace…” —Ephesians 1:7 (emphasis added)
- “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.” —Revelation 12:11 (emphasis added)
Why We Keep Passover
The Bible says…
- Passover is an everlasting ordinance to observe from generation to generation.
“So this day shall be to you a memorial; and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord throughout your generations. You shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting ordinance.” —Exodus 12:14
- Jesus came to fulfill Passover as the Lamb of God. When we celebrate Passover as Believers, we see Him at the center and remember His sacrifice.
“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” —John 1:29
- The blood of Yeshua brings us into the commonwealth (citizenship) of Israel. Therefore, we now share in their inheritance and covenant promise.
“…at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.” —Ephesians 2:12-13

Passover in Your Home | The Seder Plate
Here’s what you will need for the seder:
- Matzah (Unleavened bread)
- Maror – Horseradish (One teaspoon per person is ample)
- Charoset – A mixture of apple, nuts, wine, and cinnamon… or chunky applesauce will do. (We make enough for a heaping tablespoon per person)
- Karpas – Parsley (Just enough for everyone to have a sprig)
- Salt Water—Enough for people to dip their parsley into
- Grape Juice or Wine—Enough for each person to have 4 sips—you will also need 4 small cups or glasses per person
It is also traditional/symbolic to have a roasted lamb shank bone and a boiled egg on the table.
Are There Alternatives If I Can’t Find These Items?
Yes!
It’s less about the items specifically and more about what they represent. If you can’t access any of the items above, substitute what you can as the Holy Spirit leads. Below are some ideas for alternatives:
An Alternative to Charoset: You might use dates, figs, almonds, and honey instead of apples, nuts, wine, and cinnamon for the Charoset.
An Alternative to the Karpas: Use kale or celery tops in place of the parsley for the Karpas.
Alternative to the Matzah: Any unleavened cracker in place of the Matzah, such as saltines.
Remember, the list of the suggested elements is merely representative of the Lord’s Passover table—He knows your heart!
Other Items to Help You Prepare for Passover in Your Home…
Seder Plates—The Seder plate holds six elements (or foods) listed above. Each element has a special significance in retelling the Passover story and is the focal point of the Passover Seder.
Passover Haggadah—The Haggadah is a collection of texts that have been used for centuries to guide the Passover Seder meal. Haggadah means ‘telling’ in Hebrew. The Haggadah booklet recounts the story of the Jewish exodus out of Egypt and the Lord’s protective hand over His people.
Kiddush Cup—This is the cup used to hold the Passover wine. Kiddush is Hebrew for sanctification.
Tallit—Fringed garments have been found all throughout history. God took this otherwise ordinary article and gave it to Israel with new significance, authority, and power. The true significance of the tallit is what it represents. It is a point of contact where we engage all of our senses and connect to the spiritual realm of Heaven. It is a place of togetherness with God.
Shofar— A shofar is a ram’s horn the Israelites used (and still use today) as a battle cry (see Numbers 10:9). Believers can use shofars not merely for physical battles but for battling in prayer. A blast from a shofar is a spiritual battle cry, harkening our spirit unto God’s and even sending forth angels.
Anointing Oil—The King’s Oil, made with the ingredients found in Exodus 30, is used in spiritual warfare as a tool to release God’s power and destroy the yoke. It can be used when praying for others or for anointing your home in the same manner the priests would have anointed items in the Tabernacle. This anointing process was and still is a sign of sanctification or of setting something apart for God’s intended use and purpose.
What If I Don’t Have These Items?
That’s okay! The Father wants you to place your feet beneath His table anyway. While each item has great significance, not having one should not discourage you from participating in Passover. Again, let the Spirit guide you and get creative!
